I think Roper is the best buy. It is a no-frills Whirlpool- inside it is the same machine. Their repair record has been excellent. Also, top freezers in general are more reliable than side by sides. IMHO, the best reefers are made by Whirlpool; the best washers are Maytag, and the best gas range is a GE.
Additionally, The least expensive appliances within a model line are usually the most reliable; it is the "frills" that break first- an icemaker is a good example of this.

I think you would be happier with a sprayer without wheels and mounted on the tractor- you will have much more mobility. The simplest approach is to strap it on the hood and hook it to the battery with alligator clips. Another option is to mount it on a carry-all or pallet. It could be powered by the tractor's electrical system or a separate battery (a garden tractor battery will last a long time).

You gotta have a box scraper. For really fine work, something with wheels on the back, like a landscape rake or blade with gauge wheels, or a drag scraper, is better, but even if you had all these, you would still have have need for a box scraper.

Flat Stop can be used in tubes or tubeless. It contains rust inhibitors, but I haven't dismounted any tires containing it, so I can't speak from experience.

Chief, I think that part of the manual was written by lawyers. My choice for ballast is filled tires (water), two sets of wheel weights (these stick out 1/2 inch past the tires [standard size R4s]), and always an implement on the back. If I'm going very high with the loader, I make sure the implement is one of the heavier ones, like the box scaper or the 55 gal spayer, filled with water.

Murray, I don't know for sure that a 655 has one- as Tom says not all tractors do, or where it is, but on the 4000 series, it is mounted inline on a tube that runs horizontally between the rear pto and the attachment point for the top link.

The Deere and Power Service stuff is for diesel; Stabil is for gasoline. It is a very good product. I add it to every can of small engine gasoline that I buy. There is no doubt in my mind that it has saved me from doing several carburetor jobs.

I have an old boat trailer that's seen too much salt water to ever go on the highway again. I plan to shorten the tongue and put a 4' x 8' plywood deck on it. It won't be much work at all- just a matter of getting it to the top of the priorities list. Whichever way you go, I would certainly go for a two wheel, so you can back it.

They usually run about 28". The tiller is normally offset to the right just enough to cover the right rear wheel track. Would like to know what you think of the L135. It looks like a pretty good machine to me.

A linoleum knife works well for this- any hardware store should have one. Even better is a grape knife with serrated blade, but harder to find.

The DR F&B Mower is a serious machine. I chose the 10.5 HP Briggs & Stratton for its lower initial cost,large displacement, crankcase capacity, and parts availability. It will do everything that the higher horsepower versions will do, just not quite as fast, as it is the same machine, except for the engine. The depth of cut is 4", so if you cut the stumps at ground level, you should have no problem.
This machine and a backpack sprayer will put a serious dent in your undesirable vegetation problem.
Even if you ultimately aquire a compact tractor, you will probably still have need for these two devices.

Vibration is a serious enemy of wet cell batteries, esp. with garden equipment and compact tractors with diesel engines, rigid motor mounts, and insufficient mass to absorb the vibration. I use high density foam weather stripping, and stick it to the the bottom of the battery. This, along with the plastic battery box already mentioned should go a long way toward solving your problem. If not, there is always the option of a gel cell battery, at the expense of cold cranking amps.

Two years ago, I decided that the JD4400 was the ultimate compact tractor. Then I tuned in here, and quickly learned that this new model was apparently rushed to market too soon and had its share of teething problems. This was later confirmed by members of another tractor board. I decided to wait until the product matured. I am now awaiting the arrival of my new 4310. I already got my $20 worth. Dennis is not trying to get rich; he is just trying to survive. I think it is good for all concerned to have two or more competitors on the field. Count me in.

Tim- You might be on to something. There must be two different types of draft control. My tractor has hyd. top link and a five position load and depth control. The mount on the tractor where the top link attaches is rigid- I don't see the big spring that I remember on the old Fords.
